Alison Peters – Deputy Assistant Secretary (Community Affairs)
Alison Peters was elected unopposed as Deputy Assistant Secretary (Community Affairs) in September following the resignation of Naomi Steer who has taken up the position of Director of the Australian office of United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Alison commenced work with Labor Council in November. Alison has continued the work started by Naomi in building and maintaining alliances with a wide variety of community organisations. This work is crucial for building widespread understanding and support for working people and their unions. Such support helps to create an environment that increases the capacity of unions to grow and maintain well organised workplaces. Labor Council is well placed to work with community groups on a range of issues that affect workers and their families. Through discussion, research and joint activities the Council is able to bring our message to a wider audience and to demonstrate in a real and substantial way what the trade union movement stands for. It is also important to ensure that the broader community views unions in a positive light. This is achieved by unions being involved in a variety of social justice campaigns. Such activity maintains the Union Movement’s critical role in maintaining and improving fairness and equity in Australian society. Alison will continue to work with affiliates on these campaigns. Alison is keen to ensure that the efforts of Labor Council in securing a progressive pay equity principle leads to improvements in pay for female dominated industries and occupations. Alison will be working with affiliates to develop a better understanding of the issues surrounding pay equity amongst union members and to assist affiliates in campaigning to progress claims using the pay equity principle. The issue of balancing work and family life is one that is gaining increased public attention. A number of important initiatives are being undertaken by unions and peak organisations to ensure that family responsibilities can be managed effectively with paid work. The Labor Council Women’s Committee, which is convened by Alison, will continue to promote and pursue these initiatives in 2001. In addition to her community liaison work, Alison’s other areas of responsibility include Airlines, Banking, Media and Entertainment, Clothing and Textile, the Food industry, Sydney Water and the Department of Community Services. Alison is a member of the following boards and committees:
