Paul Howes - Organising Assistant
During 2000 Organising Assistant Paul Howes’ duties focused on union activities around the Olympic Games. Paul also continued to be responsible for the Unions NSW Organising Centre as well as assisting in the operations of LaborNET and Workers Online. After the Games Paul handled any outstanding issues from the Games. Unions NSW Organising CentreThe Unions NSW Organising Centre, or Union Shop as it has become known, remained Paul’s responsibility throughout 2000. A major focus for the Organising Centre in 2000 was the Unions 2000 Olympic Employment Referral Service. The Employment Service received over 4000 expressions of interest from union members and union supporters and of that 4000 around 3000 were placed in employment at the Olympics. All administrative and operation aspects of the Employment Services were run out of the Organising Centre. The Organising Centre also continued to provide information and resources to union members and workers interested in joining unions. The Organising Centre’s Internet Café was popular throughout the year with officials and members regularly taking advantage of the free access provided. LaborNETThroughout 2000 Paul assisted Michael Gadiel and Peter Lewis with the production of LaborNET and Workers Online. Paul also took on responsibility for the upkeep of Labor Council’s OHS site, OHSNet. Paul has also been involved in the preparations for a revamped Labor Council site that should be launched in early 2001. Paul was involved with Peter Lewis and Michael Gadiel at the ACTU Congress promoting LaborNET, Workers Online and GetOnBoard. Paul was also involved in the launch of GetOnBoard. Youth & Public AffairsPaul organised Labor Council’s annual stall at the Youth Music Festival the Big Day Out in January. The stall was successful in providing information to hundreds of young workers on the benefits joining a union and basic information on their rights at work. In 2001 the Labor Council plans to continue working to inform young people on the relevance of unions today through initiatives such as the Big Day Out and in early 2001 a new “Join a Union” leaflet will be completed which will be focused on the under 30 age bracket. Paul co-ordinated the production of a range “Unions NSW” branded material throughout the year, including the “Unions NSW” flags which featured predominantly at several rallies in 2000.
