In addition to his duties in the Information Centre, Research Assistant Peter Zangari continued to work in the Industrial area, working closely with Assistant Secretary, John Robertson and Deputy Assistant Secretary (Industrial), Mark Lennon.

Industrial

Peter assisted affiliates on a number of key industrial issues including:

State Wage Case Variations:

  • Sydney Light Rail Award
  • Real Estate Industry Award
  • Dental Technicians Award
  • Aged Care Industry (Broken Hill) Award

Section 19 Award Reviews:

  • Dental Technicians Award
  • Aged Care Industry (Broken Hill) Award
  • Sydney Light Rail Award
  • Crown Employees (Wages Staff) Award

Peter also assisted Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) unions in their ongoing negotiations on a new RTA (Wages Staff) Enterprise Agreement.

Labour Hire

One of the most important issues for affiliates is the increasing use of Labour Hire to replace full-time jobs. In 2001 the Carr Labor Government initiated inquiry into the Labour Hire Industry. Peter co-ordinated affiliate workshops with John Buchanan from ACIRRT and assisted in the preparation of the Labor Council's submission, which can be found at http://council.labor.net.au/papers/laborhire.html.

Youth Affairs

In 2001 Peter represented Labor Council on the ACTU Youth Committee. Peter assisted in the development of the Young People and Unions policy that was adopted by the 2000 ACTU Congress. Early in 2000. In addition, Peter participated on the judging panel for the NSW Department of Education and Training Trainee and Apprentice of the Year Awards and spoke to Year 12 Economics students from Mary McKillop College, Wakeley.

International Affairs

In 2000 Peter took over from Michael Gadiel as the officer responsible for International Affairs. Peter has assisted in receiving delegations, from the Ghangzhou province in China and a South African Parliamentary Delegation on Local Government reform. Peter has also been involved in the campaign for justice for the Saharawi people of Western Sahara, providing assistance to the Australian Western Sahara Association.
