Peter Lewis – Media Officer

Peter Lewis
Peter Lewis
Media Officer

Media Officer Peter Lewis has continued to assist Officers interact with the mainstream media as well as further developing the trade union movement’s own voice through LaborNET and Workers Online.

During 2000 the Labor Council ran many campaigns to support the organising activities of affiliates. Peter was responsible for developing campaign themes and liaising with journalists to ensure Labor Council’s message was conveyed to the broader community. Major campaigns in 2000 included the push for an Olympics pay bonus, grassroots action against Reith’s third wave and the successful rally in Orange to support the workers of Email.

Workers Online is now emailed directly to more than 4, 000 subscribers and is read by many more. Now entering its third year, the publication has gained a reputation for breaking news, running cutting edge interviews and providing a lively, sometimes provocative, forum for discussing issues of interest on the movement. Importantly it has given the union movement an opportunity to communicate with each other and our membership without relying on the largesse of the mainstream media companies.

With a major revamp of Workers Online planned to coincide with its 100th issue in mid-2001, affiliates and subscribers can look forward to more surprises!

Throughout the year Peter developed a network of Media Officers, who met regularly to share ideas, develop strategies and co-ordinate the messages coming out of the NSW trade union movement. This model is now being taken up at a national level as a way of getting the most out of the media professionals who work within the trade union movement.

During 2000 Peter took a three-month break and his position was filled by Noel Hester. Noel was seconded from the Australian Services Union, Services Branch. Noel has now moved to take up a position with the Australian Council of Trade Unions in Melbourne and we wish him well with the move.

In 2001 Peter will continue to work on the Internet and assist with the development of GetOnBoard, the computer/Internet venture in which Labor Council is a key stakeholder.
