Alisha Hughes, Industrial
Officer
Alisha joined the Labor Council in August 2004 on secondment from the National Union of Workers, New South Wales Branch where she was an Industrial / Research Officer for the last seven years. Alisha’s main role was to assist Deputy Assistant Secretary, Chris Christodoulou, on the Secure Employment Test Case. She is now taken over the responsibility as the Labor Council Industrial Officer and shall fulfil a much broader role in that capacity. Secure Employment Test CaseAlisha has been working with Chris Christodoulou on the Secure Employment Test Case. Her main duties have been preparing witness statements and witnesses for cross examination, participating in the conciliation process between the parties and compiling all evidence for final submissions. Alisha will continue to assist Chris with work on the test case with final submissions due in June 2005. Industrial Officer NetworkAlisha and Deputy Assistant Secretary, Matthew Thistlethwaite, attended on behalf of the Labor Council the ACTU's Industrial Officers' Conference, at which I spoke. As reported, it was evident that there is a great need for an Industrial Officers' Network to be established in New South Wales, with the purpose of the Industrial Officers' Network to give support and assistance to all union Industrial Officers. As part of this network, Alisha is working on the establishment of an email contact list, the sharing and dissemination of information through the Labor Council website and also holding breakfast briefing information seminars. Alisha and Deputy Assistant Secretary, Matthew Thistlethwaite, conducted a half-day information session in December 2004 on the impacts of the Electrolux decision, the Federal Government's proposed Industrial Relations legislation and how NSW unions can utilise the state industrial relations system. The information session was attended by a large number of unions and Alisha has received positive feedback about the day. Half-day information sessions will continue in 2005 with other topics such as Section 106 – Unfair Contracts and OHS prosecutions. Other ResponsibilitiesAlisha is also working with unions in writing a superannuation clause for NSW state awards and enterprise agreements and has been involved with the Fair Wear Coalition. She has also appeared in a number of Commission matters on behalf of the Labor Council including Newcrest Mining and Carlton and United Breweries and assisted Unions with Section 19 Award Reviews. Alisha shall also be working with other Labor Council officers on the State Wage Case 2005.
