Some 16 years after the fall of the dictatorship, the authoritarian excesses of the Lavalas party's regime continue to jeopardise the development of the poorest country in the Americas.
Socio-economic indicators in the red, political crisis, a massive increase in the number of people working in the informal economy, repression of human and union rights, child labour and a freeze on international aid are just some of the problems facing the country. Haiti remains marginalised while the rest of the world seems largely indifferent to its plight.
A prime example of a country that has been on the losing end of economic globalisation, Haiti is also one of the worst spots on the world map of union rights' violations.
