Trade unions are drawing on the expertise and outrage of their members to tackle spiralling rates of violence against urban transport workers.
Bus, rail and taxi workers in towns and cities everywhere are facing mounting levels of violence at the hands of the public, as trigger points increasingly coincide.
Socio-economic problems in poorer areas create tensions among growing urban populations, while the reduced service standards so often following privatisations or economy drives by government operators provoke anger amongst patrons. This article looks at problems in the UK, Australia and South Africa, and discusses some approaches to dealing with the problem.
