Organising For Global Union Growth

By UNI

Unions were urged to think local but act global in a key discussion on organising for global union growth at a meeting of the UNI World Executive in Nyon, Switzerland.

UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings called on affiliates to extend union rights in the home countries of multinationals to their new - and often unorganised - operations abroad.

"How can we link the strength we have domestically to the new countries?" he asked Executive members in a session that spotlighted five of UNI's organising initiatives.

"Organising call centre and IT workers is a challenge for UNI and affiliates around the world," said Philip Jennings. "We have to follow the work and extend agreements at head offices to the new home countries."

The UNI meeting focused on Walmart workers, cleaners and security guards, call centres, DHL and other global logistics giants and freelancers in many sectors.
